Description: The Arthur M. Sackler Colloquia address scientific topics of broad and current interest that cut across the boundaries of traditional disciplines. Each year, three to four colloquia are scheduled, typically two days in length and international in scope. Each colloquium is organized by a member of the NAS, often with the assistance of an organizing committee, and feature presentations by leading scientists in the field and discussions among one hundred or more researchers with an interest in the topic. Colloquia are held at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center in Irvine, California, unless noted otherwise. Papers resulting from Sackler colloquia are often published as a collection in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). Colloquium papers printed in from January 1, 1996 forward are available free online. PDFs of colloquium papers published in PNAS since 1997 are also available free online through the National Academies Press, (NAP) or reprints may be purchased through the NAP online bookstore. These colloquia are made possible by a generous gift from Jill Sackler in memory of her husband, Arthur M. Sackler.
